The United States has the most tornadoes of any country. Many of these form in an area of the central United States known as Tornado Alley.This area extends into Canada, particularly Ontarioand the .. Prairie Provinces; however, activity in Canada is less than that of the US.

Tornadoes tore through a stretch of central United States on Sunday, killing at least 16 people and leaving behind a river of carnage in Arkansas and stretches of devastation in Oklahoma and Kansas.

Forecasters said the system moving into Alabama could generate tornadoes with strength ratings of EF-3 or higher and damage tracks 30 miles long or worse.

Elsewhere, forecasters warned Georgia residents of a threat of tornadoes in northern and central counties in coming hours.
Diurnality

Tornado occurrence is highly dependent on the time of day.  Austria, Finland, Germany, and the United States' peak hour of occurrence is 5 p.m., with roughly half of all tornado occurrence between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time, due to this being the time of peak atmospheric heating, and thus the maximum available energy for storms;

Australia has about 16 tornadoes per year - excluding waterspouts, which are common. In New Zealand, a tornado hit the northern suburbs of Auckland on May 3, 2011, killing one and injuring at least 16 people.


Africa

  • Tornadoes do occur in South Africa. In October 2011, two people were killed and nearly 200 were injured after a tornado formed. Near Ficksburg in the Free State, more than 1,000 shacks and houses were flattened.

  • The September 16, 1816 recorded one of the first tornado, which destroyed the town of Rojas ( 240 km west of the city of Buenos Aires ) 

  • The September 20, 1926 an EF4 tornado struck the city of Encarnación ( Paraguay ) . killed over 300 people, the second deadliest tornado in South America.
  • On 21 April 1970, Fray Marcos (Department of Florida), an F4 that killed 11 . It was the strongest in the history of Uruguay .
  • The January 10, 1973 saw the most severe tornado Hall History of South America : The Tornado of San Justo, 105 km north of the city of Santa Fe ( in Argentina ), which was considered F5 the worst tornado in the history of the southern hemisphere of the planet, with winds that exceeded 400 km/h. 
  • The May 6, 1992, the people of López Station ( Argentina ) was devastated by an EF4 tornado that caused 4 deaths among the 150 residents.
  • The April 13, 1993, in less than 24 hours in the province of Buenos Aires ( Argentina )was given the largest tornado outbreak in the history of South America. 
  • There were more than 300 tornadoes recorded, with intensities between F1 and F3. On October 28, 1978 an EF4 tornado with winds of 270 km / h hit the city of mortars in the province of Córdoba, killing 5 people. 
  • The December 26, 2003 spent a Tornado in Cordoba an F3 with winds exceeding 300 km / h, which hit Córdoba Capital, hit just 6 km from the city center, killing 5 people and injuring hundreds.
  • On the night of September 7, 2009 EF4 tornado destroyed the town of San Pedro Argentina ( Misiones ), killing 11 people. The same tornado hit the nearby town of Guaraciaba ( in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina) killing 6 people. The neighboring towns Veloso Santo and Santa Cecilia were seriously damaged and were declared state of emergency.
